Six – Month Certificate Course Pathway

MONTH 1: Introduction, Physics & History of PBMT

Goal: Build strong foundational understanding of PBMT and its evolution.

Weeks 1–4

Module 1 – Introduction to PBMT

  • 1.1 General Concepts

  • 1.2 Light Sources (Lasers, LEDs)

  • 1.3 Physics & Tissue Optics

  • 1.4 Irradiation Parameters

  • 1.5 Penetration Depth & Tissue Interaction

  • 1.6 Research in PBM/LLLT

  • 1.7 Present Clinical Status

  • 1.8 Biomedical Applications of PBMT

  • Practical: Light-tissue demonstration, parameter measurement

Module 2 – History of LLLT and PBMT

  • 2.1 History of Photomedicine

  • 2.2 Development of Laser

  • 2.3 Discovery of PBMT

  • Clinical Relevance Discussion: Evolution from research to therapy

Week 4:

  • Assessment + Group Discussion + Case Review (Wound Healing Basics)


MONTH 2: Molecular & Cellular Mechanisms

Goal: Understand the photobiological effects at molecular and cellular levels.

Weeks 5–8

Module 3 – Molecular Mechanisms of LLLT

  • Chromophores (Cytochrome c oxidase, Ion Channels, Direct effects)

  • Signaling Molecules (ATP, ROS, NO, Ca²⁺, cAMP)

  • Activation of Transcription Factors (NF-κB, HIF, Akt/mTOR, etc.)

  • Effector Molecules (Cytokines, Growth Factors, VEGF, BDNF, etc.)

  • Practical: Measuring tissue oxygenation; demo with PBMT on skin samples

Module 4 – Cellular Mechanisms

  • Inflammation, Cytoprotection, Proliferation, Migration, Protein Synthesis

  • PBMT and Stem Cell Modulation

  • Discussion: Mitochondrial stimulation and energy metabolism

  • Week 8: Quiz + mini project submission (diagrammatic explanation of PBMT mechanism)


MONTH 3: Tissue Mechanisms & Biphasic Response

Goal: Correlate PBMT effects from cells to tissues and understand dose-response logic.

Weeks 9–12

Module 5 – Tissue Mechanisms

  • PBMT effects on Muscles, Brain, Nerves, Bones, Tendons, Skin, Hair, Fat

  • High-fluence low-power irradiation

  • Practical: Device application on phantom tissues / simulators

Module 6 – Biphasic Dose Response

  • Concept of biphasic curve, dose rate effects, energy density

  • Experimental evidence (mouse wound healing, arthritis studies)

  • Common reporting errors & protocol optimization

  • Practical: Designing treatment dosimetry chart

  • Week 12: Review + Midterm Assessment


MONTH 4: Clinical Mechanisms & Stem Cell Applications

Goal: Explore how PBMT influences systemic repair, regeneration, and protection.

Weeks 13–16

Module 7 – Pre-conditioning & Protective Effects

  • Mechanisms of pre-conditioning (IPC, anti-inflammatory, cardiac protection)

  • PBMT in CNS protection & wound recovery

  • Practical: Simulation – PBMT for pre-surgical tissue conditioning

Module 8 – PBMT and Stem Cells

  • Effects on hematopoietic, mesenchymal, adipose-derived stem cells

  • Clinical relevance in wound healing, neural regeneration, hair growth

  • Hands-on: Lab session demonstrating PBMT’s role in cellular proliferation

  • Week 16: Case-based quiz + mini viva


MONTH 5: Clinical Applications in Medicine & Surgery

Goal: Learn real-world applications across multiple systems.

Weeks 17–20

Module 9 – Edema & Lymph Flow

  • PBMT effects on microcirculation and lymphatic drainage

Module 10 – Wound Healing Applications

  • Acute & chronic wound repair, post-surgical healing, skin rejuvenation

  • Practical: Treatment planning for diabetic wound

Module 11 – Sports & Muscle Performance

  • PBMT for strength recovery, fatigue, and sports injury

  • Hands-on: Application demo on muscle rehabilitation

Module 12 – PBMT in Bone & Cartilage

  • In vitro and in vivo findings, fracture healing, arthritis, osteochondral repair

  • Week 20: Group project: “PBMT Protocol Design for Bone Healing”


MONTH 6: Advanced Clinical Integration & Future Scope

Goal: Apply PBMT principles to complex clinical systems and future innovations.

Weeks 21–24

Module 13 – PBMT in Tendons & Dermatology

  • Tendon regeneration, skin rejuvenation, burns, acne, vitiligo, alopecia

Module 14 – Dental Applications

  • PBMT for TMJ, nerve pain, post-extraction, endodontics

Module 15 – Pain Management

  • Mechanisms of PBMT analgesia (neural blockade, inflammation control, neurotransmitters)

Module 16 – CNS & Neuro Applications

  • Stroke, TBI, neurodegenerative & psychiatric conditions

Module 17 – Intravascular Laser Irradiation of Blood (ILIB)

  • Mechanism, antioxidant action, clinical safety

Module 18 – Future Directions

  • New light sources, wearable & implantable PBMT, brain and spine innovations

Final Week (Week 24):

  • Comprehensive Viva + Project Presentation + Certification Ceremony
